A Weekend Look & Life Lately

Go To Weekend Look
It has been unseasonably warm here in Indiana this fall/winter so far and I am not complaining at all. I have been able to get away with not wearing a winter coat or just wearing a vest like in the pic above.  This outfit has been what I've been wearing on most any weekend outing lately.  A sweater, vest, skinny jeans and ankle boots.  Maybe a scarf too.

Most of my outfits now are going to be more casual since I am switching jobs next week to work full time in the fitness industry.  I will no longer need to dress up in my business casual wear.  I do like dressing up, but let me tell you, I am excited about this change.  So freaking excited!

I'm not sure how (or if) the blog will evolve with this change.  I certainly won't post pics of me in my exercise gear every day.  I have been toying with the idea of transitioning the blog to more of a lifestyle/fitness blog but will make the call after I get a little settled in my new role.

Sunset on Sanibel Island
Last week we took a few days to go to our favorite Florida spot, Sanibel Island.  It was a wonderful way to recharge and get excited for this major change.

A Scarf for Color

Sweater:  H&M (September 2015) - Scarf:  Kohl's (September 2015) - Skirt:  Macy's (old) - Boots:  Fergie via DSW (August 2015)
I was comfortable wearing this. I think mostly because I was wearing my very favorite Plush fleece lined tights which are so comfortable they make me feel like I'm in pajamas no matter what else I'm wearing.

I haven't purchased much since my September binge.  I'm feeling less inclined to shop because I'm making changes in other areas in my life that are making me happier (more on that in a future post) and I always focus on buying gifts for others once the holidays roll around.  I find it easy to stick to a budget with gift buying since our families put a monetary limit for each person.  That makes things so nice and it is fun to think of the very best gifts within that constraint.

Winter Dressing: Just Add Some Tights

Sweater:  Mossimo via Target (old) - Dress:  LOFT (last year) - Shoes:  Steve Madden (old)
Last time I wore this dress (see it here) it was a tad warmer outside.  I just changed out the flats for ankle boots and added some tights to make it more appropriate for colder weather.
Other times I have blogged this dress:

Liking Lately

I like to pretend I have a fancy Holiday party to go to and plan what I would wear.  I would wear this Dress the Population 'Lola' Lace Sheath Dress (above - you have to check out the back) with this coat

This dress, I like, and would have reason to wear (with fleece lined tights).

This article has some great common sense ideas on how to get move more throughout the day beyond your regular workout.  I'm for anything that gets me more steps!

I'm pretty obsessed with Swagbucks (referral link).  Seriously, I'm really obsessed.  You get swagbucks for looking at ads or videos, playing games, shopping at select retailers or answering surveys (among other things - those are just the things I do) and can redeem them for gift cards.  I usually get a Starbucks gift card to treat myself to fancy coffee now and then.  Now I might switch over and start getting gift cards that can help me with my Holiday shopping.

Back to Black (& White)

Sweater:  Mossimo/Target (September 2015) - Top:  Mossimo/Target (October 2015) - Jeans:  LOFT (January 2015) - Shoes:  Me Too (old)
Another Casual Friday look.  Added a red belt for some color.  Probably used this blog title before.  Apparently not writing in complete sentences any longer...

Slightly Flared

Shopping at Target After Work

Needed Morning Treat Before Work
Jacket:  Urban Outfitters (old) - Sweater:  Old Navy Lightweight Sweater Knit Tee (October 2015) - Jeans: Old Navy High Rise Rockstar Flare Leg (October 2015) - Boots:  Don't remember the brand...  (Old)
I bought these jeans online on clearance.  They were $13.97 and the top was $12.52.  These were part of my September and October shopping as a sport spree of deals (I bought a lot of cheap things the past two months).  The jeans fit well but I would say they are more boot cut than flare which is a little disappointing.  The top is cute but you do have to wear something underneath it as it is a little bit sheer.  Not horrible purchases, but not perfect and nothing I really needed.

How to Shorten Short Legs

Sweater:  Ellen Tracy via Macy's (old) - Top:  Banana Republic (old) - Pants:  Old Navy (old) - Shoes:  ECCO via Nordstrom (old)
Here are some things I have had in my closet for quite a while but have never paired together.  Not sure why I never thought to wear this short sleeved shirt with this cardigan before.  I don't wear this cardigan that often because I am never 100% sure I like the front parts hanging down like they do (it's shorter and straight across in the back).  It's a super soft knit though and I love gray so that is probably why I keep it.  I don't think it is the right proportion for my long torso and short legs either...cropped pants with a low rise and a long sweater just makes my short legs look even shorter.  I think next time I pair this top and sweater together I will wear with a black skirt, black tights and black boots.  Although, I hear more and more about not worrying about dressing for your body type and just wearing what you are comfortable in.  I was comfortable in this so I guess we will just go with that and not over analyze!!

Faux Suede on a Faux November Day

Top:  Kohl's (Oct. 2015) - Skirt:  Wyatt Knit Faux Suede Midi Skirt via BlueFly (Sept. 2015 - Same) - Shoes:  TopShop via Nordstrom (Sept. 2015)

Here is an outfit of new things.  I hate to say I've gone a bit over budget in September and October.  I'm not proud of it and have not recapped the damage here on the blog.  I'm still keeping track of all my purchases but I'm not sure if I'll keep up with reporting it here.  Not just because I'm embarrassed but also because it takes a while to put those posts together.  It wouldn't take so long if I only bought one or two things!!  I'm not excited about everything I have brought in these last two months but I do like this skirt and have worn these shoes quite a bit already.

We have had some gorgeous unseasonably warm weather to start November here in Indiana.  I love we have still been able to take walking breaks outside our office building and not freeze!

Why do you Shop?

As I have mentioned many times on this blog, I like to shop.  A lot.  I think too much.  I feel unhappy when I see the ill-fitting, not coordinating, cheap things bursting from my closet.  If I had a carefully curated wardrobe of things I loved and that fit well, I wouldn't think I had a problem.  Lately I have found a few articles and books that really resonate with me that I thought I would share.

Most often when you think of or hear about someone with a shopping addiction you think of someone that is over their head in credit card debt.  Despite not being in debt from shopping, I still feel like I am doing it for the dopamine, or trying to fill some sort of void, and not the actual stuff.  This article from the Huffington Post breaks down some signs of a shopping addiction and ideas on how to break it.

"It’s an investment, rather than the cheap buzz of getting something new."
This writer of this article from The Atlantic made a goal to only buy new clothing items that cost $150 or more. As someone who uses finding and buying "good deals" as a solution for boredom, a bad mood or frustration in any area of my life, I find this idea intriguing. I don't think it is a be all end all solution of course, and clothing as an investment is debatable, but it is an interesting idea to make you think more about what you are purchasing.

Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up
Of course I had to read this much talked about book. (I bought the kindle version as to not accumulate any more clutter!) I love the idea of only having things that "spark joy". I haven't followed through with a complete closet clean out (getting everything out all at once sounds so overwhelming) but I think it would be helpful if I did. I really wonder if I have any items that truly spark joy in my closet. Impulse buys don't typically turn out to be joy inducing after the initial high of making the purchase.
Trade Shopping for Self-Care and Everything Will Change
This blog post from Be More With Less is inspiring. "The best thing that happened was that instead of stuffing my feelings, I listened to them. Instead of shopping away pain or worry, I felt it. I started to understand that those feelings were my body’s way of saying, “Listen, something is not right.” not “Let’s go buy things.”"

Comfy Cozy

Old Navy Patterned Swing Dress (same - September 2015) - Leggings:  Target (old) - Boots:  LifeStride (last winter)

I wasn't feeling well the other day so I wanted something to wear to work that was as close to lounge wear/pajamas as possible.  This swing dress from Old Navy was perfect.  It is very loose and the material is quite soft.  I am wearing a petite size so it hits me a few inches above my knees (I'm 5'3).  I added some leggings and comfy flat boots and was cozy all day.

Liking Lately

I love this mixed print look I saw at Macy's recently.  All of the items are G.H. Bass & Co.  I couldn't find the sweater online but the shirt dress is here on Macy's site.
I attended TedX Indianapolis this week.  So inspiring.

10 Banned Foods to Avoid

I am always spouting off about the ridiculousness that other countries ban foods with certain additives yet the US allows these potentially hazardous chemicals in our food.  This article and graphic above from The Food Revolution Network breaks it down nicely.

Random Outfit Pictures

I have a few outfit pictures that don't make it to the blog.  Either I don't particularly like the picture, the outfit or I just don't have a lot to say about the image so it doesn't make it it's own post.  Here are some of the latest random pictures of myself that otherwise haven't been posted before.

Selfie while shopping at TJMaxx (I didn't buy anything).

Can you believe I went to Nordstrom dressed like this?  Me either.  (I did buy something - my new greige boots.)

A casual Friday look with my new greige boots.  The color is actually called mushroom but I like to say greige.

Another casual Friday look with colored jeans and a chambray top from LOFT.

Everything's Coming Up Greige

Jacket:  INC - Macy's (old) - Shirt:  Halogen - Nordstrom (February 2015) - Pants:  Vince Camuto -  Nordstrom (July 2015) - Shoes:  ECCO - Nordstrom (old)
I really liked this outfit while wearing it.  I felt stylish, comfortable and confident.  (The pictures leave a little to be desired though.)
I was super excited to find a different top to wear with this faux suede jacket that I've had for two years now.  The jacket is sort of a greige color (beige with some gray) and is hard for me to match so I normally just wear it with black or white.  I really liked it with this purple/pink top.  I just purchased a pair of waterproof suede ankle boots in a similar greige color.  Now I'm just realizing the new chairs we purchased for our living room are sort of a greige too...  I must be drawn to this strange color that looks tan by some things and gray by others.  It is a neutral so you wouldn't think it should be difficult to pair with any color but for some reason I have a hard time mixing it up.

TopShop Lace Up Flats

Sweater:  Mossimo via Target (old) - Dress:  LOFT (last year) - Shoes:  Topshop via Nordstrom (Sept. 2015 - samesame but in red)

I gave my bare legs what is most likely their last trip outside to and from work here in Indiana for 2015.  I think I'm going to have to wear tights from here on out as it is starting to get colder and colder.  So my legs had their last harrah in a short dress that is probably actually too short for work but I didn't lift my arms or bend over so I think I was ok.
I bought these Topshop Ghillie Flats last month after agonizing over it for a long time.  I opted for the less expensive version which in person seem even more cheaply made than their $45 price tag.  But they are comfortable so far.  The laces are different over the foot, one is looped and the other isn't, and I cannot get the laces out of the holder thingies around the ankle to make them match.   Other than that, and the seemingly cheap construction, I like them!

Outfit Inspiration: Suede A-Line Mini Skirt

The suede a-line mini trend seems to be still going strong and I have to say I love the look.  I finally caved and bought one at H&M (faux suede of course) and I'm excited to put together some outfits with it.  Here are some ways I can see myself wearing it.

I love how Express styles it here.

You can find all of these looks and link back to the original sources on my Pinterest Board here!

Top:  Sanctuary via Marshall's (last month - similar) - Pants:  NY & Co (old) - Shoes:  Steve Madden Lexi (old)
In the beginning of September I was obsessing over the idea of an A-line tan suede skirt.  You know, like this:
Macy's website had a version from Sanctuary and in the outfit there was a cute printed top that I liked.  But it was $79.00! So I didn't get it.  Even with a coupon and discount, I still didn't make the purchase.  A bit later in September I was killing time at Marshall's before an appointment and came across the exact same shirt for $29.99 so I bought it.  I guess it was meant to be.

Layering Old Basics & A New Tank

Tank:  Frenchi Scallop Hem Tank Nordstrom (last month - same) - Pants:  LOFT via Thred Up (old) - Shoes:  Kohl's (old)

Added J.Crew Cardigan (old) and Switched to ECCO Shoes from Nordstrom (old)
The weather right now in the Midwest is gorgeous!  It is cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons.  It is the absolute perfect weather for running which makes me happy since I love to run. It's also perfect weather for layering (layering is necessary when the temps go from 50 degrees in the morning to 75 degrees in the afternoon!).
I started out with a black and white tank, black pants and black peep toe wedges.  I decided the wedges weren't tall enough for the pants and my toes might be cold in the office so I switched to closed toe wedges that are a little taller.  I also added a cardigan for the morning commute and the cold office.  As it gets chillier, my layering will become a bit more complex (like the tee, button down and vest combo in my last post) and include my beloved scarves!

Black Ankle Boots (Too Many Black Ankle Boots)

Over the weekend, I prepared to wear boots for the first time this fall.  I thought about wearing black ankle boots with gray jeans, a black plaid flannel and my new maroon vest. (Yes, I think about what I'm going to wear the day before (or more) before I wear it)  This led to several observations.

First Observation:  Outfits always sound better than they look since I tend to buy things that don't fit me perfectly or suit my body type.

Gray Tee:  Sonoma from Kohl's (last year) - Plaid Top:  Gap (old) - Vest:  Athleta Upside Vest (last month - same) - Jeans:  Loft (old) - Shoes:  Bella Vita Raine Boot  (earlier this year - same)

without the vest

without the plaid shirt
I don't think I like the vest over the plaid top.  Plus I think the vest is too long on me.  I don't know.  It just seems like the proportions are off somehow.  My torso is much longer than my legs so it could just be that.  I liked the last version the best with just the vest zipped up over the gray tee.  The proportion issue might be better if the plaid top was tucked in...but that wouldn't look right either.  Ugh.
I took these pics when I went to Kohl's to try on what they had of the Thakoon collection.  I tried on this gray cardigan but even the XS was HUGE.  Not just oversized, HUGE.  So I didn't get anything.
The night before this excursion, I thought I would take inventory of the black ankle boots in my closet.
Second Observation:  What??!  How did I accumulate EIGHT pairs of black ankle boots?  I took stock and eliminated 50% of them.  (Two pairs I could still return and I donated two other pairs)

I decided to keep 4 pairs.

1. A new black faux suede boots that go a little higher on the ankle and have a 2 1/2 inch heel.  These will be great with dresses and tights or tunics and leggings.   I bought them at DSW but don't see them online.
2.  My Old Suede Steve Maddens
3. The Bella Vita Raine Boot that I wore above to keep a flat pair (these are a bit dresser than the flat pair I got rid of).
4.  The open toed LifeStride that I have worn a lot in the past few months since getting them.   I returned another open toed black pair that didn't seem to be as comfortable and the heel was even higher than these.  Plus I had never worn them!  Back they go!

Third Observation:  I still have a lot of work to do on my wardrobe and shopping habits.  I have been really focused on clothing but not shoes.  I'm going to keep working on cleaning out my shoe collection. Next up - Brown and Tan Boots!
